WHAT WE DO

Helping those in our community who are the most vulnerable

EDUCATING HAITIAN STUDENTS

We run a school through our "Center" in Carrefour (one of the most dangerous and impoverished cities in all of Haiti) where we employ local teachers, train kids from Kindergarten through High School, and give them 2 meals a day when they are with us.  Despite the government shutdowns that are a normal part of Haitian life these days, we have remained open every school day and our kids and teachers are excelling!

When we aren't in school, you can often find us running community awareness programs that help our people thrive in areas from nutrition to community safety measures.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

At Gabriel's Promise Haiti, we are a literal lighthouse of hope for our community.

HEALTH:  We take countless people to the hospital every year, pay for much needed surgeries, facilitate what is often life-saving medical care, aid teen moms through their pregnancies, provide meals, give health and welfare kits to those in times of crisis, and so much more.

SAFETY:  Gabriel's Promise is known in Carrefour for being a safe place where hope is found and where help is on the way.  We help rescue child slaves, take in those who needed shelter, and have even adopted some into our own family. We have an emergency preparedness team that is trained to respond to needs as they arise.  The truth is that we care for our community and our community knows it because so many have actually experienced that care and protection first hand.

MENTORING & JOB TRAINING

We’ve helped to start dozens of small businesses in our community. Seamstresses, home boutiques, mini-food and beverage storefronts, and SO many sellers on the streets selling everything from clothes to soap to fruit that we helped get started.

Additionally, in order to help fund our own efforts internally with a few small business opportunities, we also so sell filtered water, a menu of cold drinks, and a private moto-service for hire to our community.

THE STORY

Gabriel’s Promise began when our founder, Dani-Jo, was introduced to Haiti in March of 2011. Within a few days of being in country she found herself inside an orphanage in Carrefour, a small city outside of the capital. She was working on fulfilling her film class’ project while in Haiti and had been given instructions to shoot through objects, utilizing the light on either side. After spotting a dark room in the corner of the building she crawled into the small space and lowered herself to the ground to get the shot. Her eyes were met with those of a precious baby who appeared to be living underneath a wire bed frame in the corner. Without thinking she tried to reach in and lift the toddler out from the darkness. The child swatted at her hand and let out a scream, and she was forced to pull her arms away. After time, he slowly crawled out from his hiding place and allowed her to hold him. The memory of the two sitting together weeping has stuck with her since.

It was out of that very moment that Gabriel’s Promise came to be. Gabriel’s Promise is more than a organization, and it’s more than a relief effort. It is a promise to the innumerable Gabriel’s in the world.

It’s a promise to love, a promise to speak,

and a promise to serve.
